In 2001, Dato' Sri Tony Fernandes founded Tune Air Sdn Bhd with Dato' Kamarudin Meranun, with a vision to liberalize air travel at affordable fares. They bought the ailing airline for RM1 (US$0.25) and turned a 2 aircraft operation into the largest low cost carrier in Asia. Today, AirAsia and AirAsia X are the success stories born from one dream and the founders’ faith in seeing their vision through.
AirAsia is Asia's leading and largest low cost carrier. The airline has carried more than 110 million passengers since 2001 and operates ASEAN's most extensive air network. AirAsia currently operates more than 100 routes to over 60 destinations, with 400 flights daily from hubs located in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. As of February 2010, AirAsia operates a fleet of 72 aircraft and is one of Airbus’ largest customers, with an order for 175 A320s.
In 2007, AirAsia X commenced operations as the world's first low-cost, long-haul carrier. The airline is an affiliate of AirAsia and focuses on high frequency, point-to-point services to long-haul destinations from Malaysia. AirAsia X offers passengers both comfortable economy class seats and lie flat beds in its premium offering.
The carrier currently flies to destinations in China, Taiwan, Australia, India and the UK. The AirAsia X fleet comprise of A330 and A340 aircraft. AirAsia X was also one of the launch customers for the revolutionary A350.
